    Soroptimist International will be attending the 65th Annual UN Conference for Non-Governmental Organizations next week for the needs of women and girls

    A Soroptimist International delegation will be speaking up for women and girls at the UN DPI/NGO Conference next week. The theme of the 63rd UN DPI/NGO Conference is Advance Global Health, Achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The conference is an annual event, run in partnership between the United Nations Department of Public Information, the Australian Government and the worldwide NGO community. The dates of the conference are the 30th of August to the 1st of September.     Enjoy Toe-tapping Entertainment with Backspin, for ASK Friendship Centre

    ASK Friendship Society is one of the organizations that Soroptimist International of Vancouver has sponsored for many years. A. S. K. = The Arbutus, Shaughnessy, Kerrisdale Friendship Society ASK held its small fundraising event on Thursday, August 14, 2014. Five of the members from Soroptimist International of Vancouver had supported the event and enjoy the great time there. The purpose of this Fundraiser was to raise funds for gasoline and other necessary maintenance expenditures for its transportation – an 18 passenger wheelchair accessible vehicle. ASK Friendship Society is an Adult Day Centre, funded by the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, focusing on the well being of seniors and their caregivers. One…

    A Local Project – Supporting Queen Alexandra School

    For years, Soroptimist International of Vancouver has committed to provide the funding to Queen Alexandra School on East Broadway for its “healthy recess snack program” for the children in Kindergarten to Grade 7. It is one of the greatest projects we have. To support Literacy, every Christmas the club provides Book Bags that handmade by Soroptimist members to Grade 1 and Grade 2 children at Queen Alexandra. Each Book Bag contains a book and a snuggly reading buddy. The children have been thrilled to receive a book they can keep for their very own.     Soroptimist will be launching a New Program for Girls in July 2014

    In July 2014, Soroptimist International of the Americas will launch a new global program to help girls take control of their lives and live their dreams. As the Women’s opportunity Awards is SIA’s cornerstone program for assisting women, this new girl program will be the primary way SIA will assist girls. Concepts and research was approved by the board of directors in June 2013. The draft goal of the program is “girls will have the resources they need to pursue their career goals.” This will include providing girls with information on available careers, goal setting, pursuing goals and overcoming setbacks. K. = The Arbutus, Shaughnessy, Kerrisdale Friendship Society ASK Friendship Centre is an Adult Day Centre focusing on the well being of seniors and their caregivers.     Birthing in Pacific – reducing maternal mortality and morbidity

    Everyday in Papua New Guinea 3 women die due to complications of pregnancy/childbirth. For every woman who dies, about 30 sustain significant disability. 45 out of every 1000 babies born will not live to see their first birthday. Birthing in the Pacific is a Soroptimist International project to save mother’s lives in Papua New Guinea, reducing maternal mortality and morbidity by training and equipping birth attendants, educating communities and improving facilities. The project was set up by SI South West Pacific, involves Soroptimist clubs in Papua New Guinea and is supported by Soroptimists worldwide as part of the 2011-13 Soroptimist International President Alice Wells’ December 10 Appeal.
